THE POWER OF THINKING WITHOUT THINKING
BLINK
- Malcolm Gladwell
What does BLINK mean to you?
Is it only a small amount of a moment for you! Do you realize that in Blink of a moment you can break down, look at and judge a person and arrive at a conclusion?
Our brain is made up of unconscious, conscious and subconscious mind and whatever we do is because of them.
Unconscious mind always communicates with conscious mind via subconscious.
The book tells us about the power of thinking without thinking which is subconscious of course what is it capable of and also many other insights that will amaze you.
The three main RULE’s(the takeaways) that Mr.Gladwell mention in the book are
- The benefit of quick decisions
- Instinct management
- Snap judgment control
I hope every one of you knows what is a Blind Taste Test, let me give an example of that what has happened between Pepsi and coke in the late 70’s...
In the blind taste test, it appears that Americans was chosen Pepsi, but did not mean Pepsi taste better than coke.and then Americans started believing that Pepsi was better than coke and so did coke and then coke began to think “maybe we should change the coke recipe too” .they made it little lighter and sweeter which they called it “new coke”. They performed the blind Test again this time it beat Pepsi and also about 6-8% population(that’s really huge) preferred coke on Pepsi.
Brain Reaches Conclusion Without Telling You
In a gambling experiment which was conducted between red and blue cards, the gamblers started avoiding red cards long before they were actually aware that they ware avoiding them. It took another 70 cards for the conscious mind to realize that.
The Thin Slicing
Let me first tell you what is thin-slicing, our ability to use limited information from a very narrow period of an experiment to come to a conclusion Or an ability to find patterns.
In an experiment conducted to a class of students, They have shown a 10 sec video of the lecture of a teacher and a teacher for an entire semester to know which teacher is good or not.
Guess what happened?
The results are similar you no need an entire semester to know whether a teacher is good or not, it just happens in a Blink of a second and the judgment too.
There is one more experiment, judging a person based on the how he/she arrange it ! do check it out !!
What We Want And What We Actually Want Don’t Match
In the book, he mentions about speed dating which is of six minutes and there was survey/questionnaire conducted beforehand, after the date, after one month and after next year.
And the result is inside the heading itself !!
The Story Time Problem
For example, if I say a name of a celebrity (Tom Cruise) /object you can imagine them but if you describe them it is difficult to identify right.
If I say you not to think of elephant !! what did you think of?
LESS Is MORE
I have come across this concept in many of the books in each book concept is similar but every time I read about it sound new and interesting.
An algorithm which was developed by a teacher for a hospital to reduce the number of patients to get admitted in the hospital, because it very difficult for a doctor to test all the patient whoever comes to the hospital for heart-related problems(the algorithm is based on identifying heart problem ) as it takes time and effort.
so by doing this it helped them and reduce the process and we can say less is more is very useful and one more thing does read the story it’s a true story and you will not be disappointed.
Don’t Judge The Book By Its Cover
Let's take the example of 7up, there was a problem with the drink saying it was too was too lemony and they said that they are going to change the formula but they did n’t!
They just changed the packaging to make it feel whats inside!
Disliking VS Unusual
“AERON CHAIR”
How many of you know about it, there is a story behind do check it out!!
Let me brief about it, most of them did not like it because of its skeleton structure and most of them never used it because of its unusual but when they tried it, it was a whole new story and many companies started making chairs similar to it.
7 Seconds In The Bronx: The Delicate Art Of Mind Reading
You face is the signal to tell whats going on your mind !!
Before briefing you about this topic, I was surprised to know about the tragedy that happened to the immigrant from Guinea named “Amadou Diallo” who was killed by four new york city police. They fired totally of 41 shorts,19 of which struck him, outside his apartment.
They actually mistook him for a rape suspect from one year earlier and all the four police officers are charged with second-degree murder.
Let me tell you about to scientist Paul Ekman and Friesen ultimately developed and assembled all the combinations of facial expressions into a system called Facial Action Coding System(FACS).
Most interesting part is that with the help of FACS, PIXAR(Toy Story) and DREAMWORKS (Shrek) put them to use for their movies too.
The Statute That Didn’t Look Right
At a museum there was a statute which was very old and the person was loving it and decided to buy it and after all the formalities he thought of showing it to the expert so then an expert had come and within a blink of a second he told it was fake !! it the optimal state of arousal.
Last but not least I hope everyone liked reading the summary of the article and it was interesting too.
Do read the book, it fun, interesting and amazing!!
